Looking for a Safe Solo Escape? Here Are 5 Countries That Actually Love Us

Look, I love my girls. I really do. But if I had waited for the group chat to reach a consensus on the dates, the flight, or the hotel, I’d still be sitting on my couch in my scarf watching other people live my dreams.

If you’re waiting for "the right time" or for your bestie to finally save up her coins, you’re going to be waiting forever. Here at Solo Jetsetter, we don’t do "waiting." We do "booking." We book the deal when it drops, we overpack the carry-on, and we figure out the rest while in the air and when we land.

But I get it. The world can feel big, and as Black women, we have a different set of math to do when it comes to safety. We’re looking for more than just a low crime rate, we’re looking for the vibe. We want to know: Do they see us? Do they like us? Can I walk down the street without feeling like a specimen or a target?

I’ve been to over 100 countries completely solo, and I’m telling you right now: the world is waiting for you. You just need to know where to start. Here are five countries that don't just "tolerate" us, they actually love us.

1. Jamaica (Montego Bay): The Motherland of the Caribbean

If you want to feel like the main character the second you step off the plane, go to Jamaica. Specifically, head to Montego Bay. There is something about being in a place where the majority of the people look like you that just hits different. It’s like a giant exhale for your soul.

The Vibe: High energy, Black excellence, and the best jerk food you’ll ever eat. You aren't "the Black girl" here; you're just the girl.

Safety Check: Now, listen close. Jamaican men are bold. They will see you walking and offer you a poem, a wedding proposal, and a tour of the island all in one breath. It’s mostly playful banter, but you’ve got to keep your "Overpacked and Unbothered" energy high. A firm "No, thank you, I'm good" goes a long way.

Pro Tip: Don’t mess with the local buses if it’s your first time. Book a vetted driver or use the Knutsford Express to get between cities. I generally rent a car, but I’ve been to Jamaica more times thank I can count and I know my way around now. Stay in a high-end resort or a boutique hotel, leave the hostels for the college kids.

2. Puerto Rico: The Easy "Yes"

For my U.S. sisters, Puerto Rico is the ultimate low-stress solo move. No passport? No problem. No currency exchange? Perfect. It’s the "Book first, think later" destination of your dreams.

The Vibe: Old San Juan is a dream of pastel buildings and cobblestone streets. But the real magic is in the Afro-Boricua culture. Head over to Loíza for the real-deal food, music, and art. The connection to the African diaspora is deep here, and you’ll feel it in the drums and the spirit of the people.

Safety Check: San Juan is generally very safe for solo women. Use Uber to get around, it’s cheap and reliable. Just like at home, don't be wandering down dark, empty alleys at 2 AM. Use your gut. If a street looks sketchy, it probably is.

Solo Move: Grab a mofongo, I personally don’t indulge but I hear it’s the absolute best for my foodies, find a spot with live salsa, and just be. You’ll find that people are warm, welcoming, and very used to seeing sistas traveling solo. Check out the official tourism site for more localized safety updates.

3. Costa Rica: The Pura Vida Reset

If your soul is tired and you just need to talk to some trees (and maybe some monkeys), Costa Rica is calling your name. It is one of the safest countries in Central America and a total haven for solo travelers.

The Vibe: It’s all about Pura Vida, the simple life. If you want a more Afro-Caribbean feel, head to the Caribbean side (Puerto Viejo). You’ll find incredible food, reggae vibes, and a community that will make you feel right at home.

Safety Check: Costa Rica is very tourist-friendly. The biggest "danger" is petty theft on the beach. Don’t leave your bag unattended while you go for a dip. Stay in a luxury jungle resort where the security is tight and the views are endless.

Why We Love It: It’s a nature-heavy reset. You don't need a partner to hike to a waterfall, ride horses, or soak in a hot spring. You just need your Solo Starter Bundle and a sense of adventure.

4. Portugal: The European Dream

If you’ve been dreaming of Europe but you’re worried about the "cold" reception some countries give us, look at Portugal. Specifically Lisbon.

The Vibe: Lisbon is vibrant, hilly, and incredibly beautiful. But the best part? It has a massive Afro-Portuguese community. You’ll see sistas with braids, locs, and natural hair everywhere. You won't feel like an outsider; you'll feel like part of the fabric of the city.

Safety Check: Portugal is consistently ranked as one of the safest countries in the world. You can walk the streets of Lisbon or Porto at night (sticking to well-lit areas, obviously) and feel perfectly fine. The public transit is top-tier, and Bolt (the European Uber) is super affordable. Be sure to download the app pre-flight.

Pro Tip: Bring comfortable shoes. Those hills are no joke. And yes, you can definitely find a braider in Lisbon if your vacation hair starts acting up.

5. South Africa (Cape Town): The Soul Stirrer

I saved the big one for last. South Africa: and specifically Cape Town: is a life-changing trip for any Black woman. Being in the Black majority is a powerful experience that every one of us should have at least once.

The Vibe: Dramatic mountains, crashing oceans, world-class wine, and a history that will move you to tears. Cape Town is sophisticated, beautiful, and deeply layered.

Safety Check: I’m going to be real with you: South Africa requires you to have your "Street Smarts" turned all the way up. You don't walk alone at night: not even for a block. You use Uber for everything door-to-door. I got lucky and hired my uber driver for the week. More on that story later. Stay in neighborhoods like Bloubergstrand, Sea Point or Green Point that have high security.

Why It’s Worth It: The reward is massive. The conversations you’ll have, the art you’ll see, and the way you’ll feel standing on top of Table Mountain is worth every bit of the hype. For more safety deep-dives, check out our blog on luxury solo safety.

Go Anywhere. Fear Nothing.

The truth is, nowhere is 100% safe, including your own backyard. But fear is a terrible travel agent. It will keep you small, and it will keep you stuck.

When you travel solo, you aren't just seeing a new country: you're meeting a new version of yourself. The version that doesn't need a committee to decide on dinner. The version that knows how to navigate a foreign city and trust her own gut.

Stop waiting for the "perfect" time. The deal is going to expire while you’re thinking about it. Book the trip, overpack that suitcase, and get out there. The world actually loves you: it’s just waiting for you to show up.
